Why does my toilet
keep running?
A running toilet can be easy to hear—or it may refill briefly between uses. The pattern is useful information when you ask for a repair.
Book online ↗Listen for the pattern
Does the toilet run continuously after a flush, stop when the handle is adjusted, or refill periodically when nobody has used it? Note the pattern and whether the bowl level changes. Different patterns can help narrow the next inspection step.
Inside the tank or outside the toilet?
Water transferring from the tank to the bowl can involve tank components. Water visible on the floor or around the base is a different concern and should be described separately. Avoid assuming that every toilet leak is a flapper problem.
Decide between repair and replacement
Ask which component has failed, whether compatible parts are available, and whether the fixture is otherwise in good condition. If replacement is being considered, check dimensions, bowl configuration, and water-efficiency information before buying.
A useful reference
EPA WaterSense explains running-toilet warning signs and directs homeowners to repair resources or a plumber. For replacement research, its residential-toilet information explains the WaterSense label. See the source below.
